Study goal:
This study is conducted by the HCIG and DeepMicroscopy research groups. It aims to investigate how medical professionals interact with AI-based decision support systems and how interface design affects their use and acceptance. No additional background knowledge is required beyond the medical expertise acquired through your education and professional experience. Participation is entirely voluntary.
Procedure:
The study will begin with a brief questionnaire collecting general demographic information. The main experiment is divided into two parts, each representing a different routine pathology task. Per segment, you will evaluate 20 cases with AI support and indicate your certainty in each assessment. Both parts will begin with a brief training session allowing you to familiarize yourself with the task at hand, the AI system, and the user interface. The entire study is expected to take approximately 40 minutes to complete.
Potential risks and right of withdrawal:
No risks are anticipated, as participants will only perform tasks that are part of routine pathology practice. Participants may withdraw from the study at any time without the need to provide any reasons. Doing so will not result in any personal disadvantages.
Compensation:
As a token of appreciation for your time and commitment, participants who wish to do so will receive a personalized performance report on the study tasks and will be acknowledged by name in the acknowledgments section of the resulting publication.

Type of Data Collected and Anonymization:
In this study, your responses (i.e., the primary data described in the Procedure section) will be stored as numerical values, coded responses for categorical, multiple-choice, and Likert-scale questions, or as text for open-ended questions. All collected data will serve solely the purpose of the study and will be treated with strict confidentiality. The only personal information gathered includes your age, gender, professional status and years of professional experience. No additional data, such as IP addresses or timestamps from accessing the browser interface, will be automatically collected. Only the information you voluntarily provide will be analyzed. Your email address will also be collected to allow us to contact you regarding future studies and to provide updates on the current experiment. This data will be stored in a pseudonymized manner: email addresses will be assigned unique identification numbers and stored in a separate, secure database. The actual study data will only be linked to these IDs and managed independently. Access to both databases, and thus the ability to connect study data to personal information, is restricted to the project leads (Prof. Reiner and Prof. Aubreville) and selected project staff (Ms. Rosbach). Upon request, the final, anonymized study data may be shared with other researchers or published on secure platforms for academic archiving and exchange. Your email address will never be shared with third parties or made public.
Further Processing of Data:
The processing of study data is carried out completely anonymized at the Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt using a continuous identification number (e.g., P1), which does not allow any conclusions about individuals.
Data Retention Period:
The primary study data will be retained and made available for a period of ten years in accordance with academic best practices. Participant email addresses, however, will only be stored for the duration of the current research project (24 months). All legal data retention and deletion requirements will be observed. Once the retention periods have expired, any necessary data deletions will be documented in a transparent and traceable manner. If the raw data includes any personal information, this information will be deleted immediately after it is no longer required.
